Bathroom Functionality Starts with Spacing

The spacing of fixtures plays a key role in determining the functionality of any space. While this seems challenging, particularly with smaller bathroom spaces, the good news is that there’s a general rule-of-thumb to help guide you through properly spacing out your bathroom fixtures so that you have plenty of space to towel off after a relaxing bath without bumping into your vanity.

Play by the Rules

The 2-3-5 Rule helps homeowners and designers determine where to place everything from the tub to the sink in bathrooms. While it may be impossible to add more space to a bathroom, using the space you have in the most effective way is certainly possible.

According to the 2-3-5 Rule, all bathroom fixtures should be placed to allow either a two-foot, three-foot or five-foot space for both the fixture clearance and the user. For example, a sink that takes up 2 feet by 2 feet of space should have an area of at least 2 feet by 2 feet around it to accommodate the person using the sink. For fixtures that are larger, such as a bathtub, more user area should be added.

Sizing it Up

This rule is extremely helpful when determining what you want to include in your remodel process. If you have a small bathroom you’d like to renovate, you can plan out how you can best use the space you have to get the most use out of it. For example, if you feel your bathroom is cramped and currently have a tub and shower, you may have to leave one out in your renovation in order to maximize your space.

Conversely, if you have a very large area for your bathroom, using the 2-3-5 Rule can help you plan where to place your fixtures in order to achieve the highest level of functionality.
